I highly disagree with this judgement. If it makes "sense", then it show how much Japanese 'Anime watchers' want to dodge political debates even the work itself is political.

Majima`s "neutral" doesn`t mean anything with modern citizen`s tolerance. It is more like a natural rule in taoism. Yin-Yang concept was not for dichtomy, but it is more like a circulation(i.e. 興亡盛衰, 花無十日紅). So if I have to call him a terrorist, his ideal is very pre-modern religious one.

And chisato`s view is... I agree that it is on the base of relativism, but it is very "right-wingness" one.

It consists of affirming “the given system” because the "current society" is designed “to find justice and meaning around you" and if you try to change it, you may violates on others` rights. But her job is using violation, isn`t it? Even she hates to kill someone, but she uses violence validated by Nation-State. Chisato uses here relativism as an oppression to express of others` rights(in terms of Kant).

Of course, in reality, the system is a "state" and "law" violent monopoly with some legitimacy, and I don't think "new-wave right-wings" will allow secret assassination forces to be operated. But I think their mindset is similar to hers. They seems non-political, unlike traditional right wings, but they highly disagree with the raise of voices of "those who seek justice but are silenced" or "those who do not have right".

And does it properly represent the acutuality of Japan? No, I don`t think so. We see many real terrors after this show. The political tension is very high, and it is not just from public news. I am living in Japan now, in the dome of tokyo, and we -- Young Japanese students and foreign ones -- talks about the future of Japan and debates political things. If it represents something, then it is that Japanese anime watchers don`t wanna see political things in anime, in a "new-wave right-wing" fashion.

I don`t think that there is no hope for Japanese animation. Many works from Ikuhara Kunihiko connected with poltical things, And Megalbox 2 — Nomad — surprised me how much creators wanna commit to global poltical issues, using both traditional Japanese images and Mexican ones. And Production I.G. always made works in the skeptism of the current state of Japan. But I see “Lycoris recoil” as a fragment of current needs for anime.

In addition to that, The witch of mercury represents the high tension in traditional gundam fashion and also under the family tree of “Revolutionary Girl Utena”
